Every year on August, Medellín, "la ciudad de la eterna primavera" is full of color, music and beauty in the celebration of the traditional Flowers Fair, in which cultural and recreational performances take place, and “el desfile de silleteros” is the main event. The “Silleteros” are peasants who cultivate flowers and live in the region of Santa Elena, on the east of Medellin, once a year, those people get together in family, and they make with flowers, wires and long working nights a "silleta" with a special reason previously chosen, in that way they participate in the traditional parade, which, since 1957 adorns the main streets and avenues of the "capital de la montaña".
All kind of people participate, it involves every social class. The schedule is given to all people in the neighborhoods in order to offer best attendance to the event. Peasants walk with typical dresses: “carriel, poncho and alpargatas”. Only one person of the family can participate and has the honor for carrying on his back 80 kilos of flowers, On the parade, different dance groups participate representing Antioquia’s folklore, town bands and floats full of flowers in which there the most beauty queens form Antioquia.
Besides the already mentioned “desfile de silleteros”, the Flower Fair has a schedules for 9 days where you can find different shows like: the Equine Fair, in which are exibit the most beautiful horses from Antioquia
